    Work experience

A range of experience in primary care or a hospital. Voluntary work in care homes hospices or special schools. Work experience form completed and returned at interview.

    Admissions Test Usage:

Candidates' UCAT scores are considered in our selection for interview but are not the sole indicator for selection. They are considered alongside actual and predicted academic achievement in deciding who will be selected for interview. A minimum UCAT cut-off score is NOT used. A score (between 1200 - 3600) is allocated based on the applicant's overall performance in UCAT compared with all other applicants to Aberdeen.

In Aberdeen we will allocate a score based on the total numerical score from the four subtests: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning and decision making. The SJT will not be scored, but it may be used in offer making when there are candidates with similar scores.

    GCSEs

Minimum of grade B in science, English and Maths. Home applicants: GCSE results are scored and the total score is scaled to a maximum of 6 then combined with a score derived from the total UCAT result (maximum of 4).

    Personal statement

Personal statement is not scored. It is expected that the statement provides evidence of commitment to study medicine.

    Interview method

    Multiple mini-interviews

    Work experience

Work experience does not factor into the process of selection for interview. The understanding gained from work experience will be invaluable in enabling applicants to address the issues presented to them at interview.

    Admissions Test Usage:

Applications will receive an overall score, which is the sum of weighted scores for each of the academic and UCAT components. The weightings will be: 60% academic and 40% UCAT

There is no minimum UCAT cut-off score. Your UCAT results, excluding the band result for the Situational Judgment Test (SJT) component, will be separated into deciles and scored. For example the top 10% of applicants’ scores will be in the top decile and will receive a maximum score of 4.0 in our process. For guidance, the score conversion we used in 2018-19 is as follows (converted to a 0 – 4 scale):

Total UKCAT Score Decile Converted score
    2950 and above 10th 4.000
    2840 " 9th 3.556
    2770 " 8th 3.111
    2710 " 7th 2.667
    2650 " 6th 2.222
    2590 " 5th 1.778
    2520 " 4th 1.333
    2430 " 3rd 0.889
    2330 " 2nd 0.444
    2320 and below 1st 0.000

It is important to note that the thresholds for each decile will be different for a new set of applicants. Therefore, the UCAT score applied to your application may differ from the above table but the difference is expected to be marginal. The decile boundaries for 2017-18 were very similar therefore your UCAT score is unlikely to move by more than one decile.
The band score for the Situational Judgment Test (SJT) component of UCAT will be used at the interview stage.

    Admissions Test Usage:

BSMS requires all applicants to sit the BMAT in the year of application in order to be considered for interview.

We score the BMAT out of 28 (9 marks for Section 1, 9 marks for Section 2 and 5 marks for each element of Section 3). We then rank all applicants according to their total score out of 28 and work down the rankings to fill our interview places.

For 2019 entry, applicants who scored 16.1 or higher were invited to interview. Widening participation applicants identified as having contextual data were ranked separately, and this year all were invited to interview. The cut-off score for interview varies each year.

All applicants are required to take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) in the current cycle. The combined score from all subtests, with the exception of Situational Judgement, will be used to select applicants for interview. There is no cut-off score for the UCAT. Using data from 2017/18 cycle, applicants with a UCAT score of 2660 or above would have been issued with an invitation to interview had we been solely using UCAT for selection. This number is subject to change year-on-year depending on the strength of the cohort, therefore cannot be used with certainty to predict the likelihood of receiving an invite to interview for the current cycle.

The overall (cognitive) score is used alongside the interview score to rank and select applicants to whom an offer is made. The SJT component score is included within the interview score.

Whilst a high UCAT score may be advantageous, a low score in an otherwise strong application, will not automatically disqualify an applicant from consideration.

Applicants who take the UCAT (SEN) test will be required to provide evidence to the University detailing their entitlement to the extra time. This evidence can take the form of a Psychologist, medical (GP) or a dyslexia report. Further information will be sent to relevant applicants once a UCAS application has been received.

    Admissions Test Usage:

For entry in September 2020 the Medical School will interview approximately 800 applicants. An interview or entry is not guaranteed. Applicants should note that they will be considered within their year of application and by the standard presented during that admissions cycle alone.

We consider the UCAT with all other aspects of the application. Interviews are allocated accordingly by UCAT score for those that meet all other screening aspects (i.e minimum academic requirements and satisfactory personal statement and reference). The range of scores we consider changes each year as the performance of each admissions cohort varies. Additionally, we are required to manage the number of students admitted to our programme in line with targets set by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council (i.e. Home/EU, Rest of UK and International). Therefore the lowest total UCAT score we consider for interview may vary based on the applicant group. 'The Situational Judgement' section of the UCAT test will not be taken into consideration for entry in 2020.

To help you determine what previous scores would have been considered (although it does vary each year), please visit our MBChB Admissions Data document. Applicants who have not sat the UCAT will not be considered for entry.

    • All applicants are required to take the UCAT in the year of application.
    • You will need to achieve Band 1 ,2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UCAT

Invitations to an interview will be based on:

    • The content of your UCAS application
    • Your performance in all three sections of BMAT

BMAT cut-off scores are calculated each year, as a result of ranked candidate BMAT scores versus number of expected interview sessions. As a result, the absolute BMAT cut-off changes each year. However, the BMAT cut-off scores from previous admissions cycles may be used as a guide..

King’s does not have a threshold UCAT score in any particular year, but all candidates are still required to take the UCAT examination for this course. The overall UCAT score averaged across the four subtests is given more consideration than the individual subtest scores. The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is also taken into account when shortlisting.

When considering those students which will be shortlisted for interview the selectors consider the following; GCSE (or equivalent performance), predicted or achieved A-level grades (or equivalent), the personal statement, the reference and the score in the UCAT. These contribute to the shortlisting of candidates, and we do assess for this programme holistically, taking in to account all these factors and your performance in the context of your educational background. Examination results and the UCAT score are perhaps the most important factors when considering applications. These are highlighted as they provide us with the fairest and most consistent method of assessing applicants.

Applicants who progress to the second stage of the process and who achieve the required band in the SJT will be ranked according to their overall UCAT score (Home/EU applicants must offer SJT bands 1 to 3, international applicants can offer any of the 4 bands). Following ranking of the overall UCAT scores, the top scoring applicants, will be invited to interview in the third stage of the process. For Home/EU applicants a competitive score in the 2017- 18 admissions cycle was 2460. The UCAT threshold for invitation to interview varies on an annual basis and is dependent on the number of applicants who meet/exceed the minimum academic criteria, their performance in the admissions test, and on the number of interview slots that are available.

    GCSEs/Scottish Nationals

Seven GCSEs at grade 7 (A). English Language, Maths and at least two science subjects are required at grade 6 (B).

    Admissions Test Usage:

We have two primary selection criteria involving the UKCAT.

    Application of the UKCAT threshold

If your UKCAT score is in the approximately the top third of all results nationally then you will be invited to interview based on our UKCAT threshold as long as you meet our minimum academic requirements (for example, GCSE and predicted grades). We expect to invite approximately 900-1000 candidates to interview based on this selection route. To help identify talented students from all backgrounds, UKCAT scores from UK/EU candidates who come from similar educational and socio-demographic backgrounds are considered against each other. This is conducted using supplementary information provided by publicly available datasets. To help you determine where your UKCAT score sits nationally, please refer to the UKCAT Cognitive Test Statistics (PDF).

What if my score does not meet the threshold?

We recognise that everyone has a different set of skills. If your UKCAT does not fall within the top third of results nationally then we will include it as part of a holistic assessment using all the information available to us to arrive at a decision (for example, GCSE grades, A-level profile, additional qualifications, NAI form etc). We expect to invite 500-600 applicants to interview on this selection route.
