Test Overview

The USMLE exam series are required for all Doctors who want to become Licensed in the US. In order to gain Board Certification in the US and ultimately become a Licensed Physician, you will be required to complete a Residency of 3 – 8 years in a specialty of your choice. In order to gain Residency, you must have certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

To gain ECFMG Certification you need to complete the USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK and USMLE Step 2 CS exams. The USMLE Step 1 is typically taken by US Medical Graduates at the end of their 2nd year of Medical School and tests their knowledge of the Basic Sciences. Topics tested include the following:

  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Medial Genetics
  • Pharmacology
  • Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Physiology
  • Immunology

Test Format

The USMLE Step 1 Exam Format

Time: 8 hours

Format: 350 USMLE Questions, not grouped in any way. Clinical Vignette question format, requiring students to have knowledge covering a number of different organ systems or disciplines and make a number of conclusions based on limited information.

Topics Tested: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Behavioral Science, Physiology, Immunology

Question Types: Multiple Choice – You will be asked to pick one best answer from 5 of more possible answers.

Test Scores

USMLE Step 1 Scoring

The exam will be scored between 140 and 260 points. The passing score is 185 (75). You will receive a three digit and two digit score. The three digit is your mean score, and the two digit is derived from this as some Medical Boards refer a “two digit passing score of 75”.

The three digit passing score will always equate to 75.

185 (75) is the minimum passing score. It is not adequate for gaining a Residency Program. US Seniors score on average between 210 and 230 points and you will be competing with these people to gain Residency.

You can only retake the USMLE Step 1 exam if you fail. If you get a low passing score, you can not retake to improve it. Kaplan can help you increase your USMLE Step 1 score.

Remember Residency Program coordinators will use your USMLE Step 1 score to judge your application. The scores are used as they are a quantifiable example of an applicants ability, they are comparable and reliable.
