Gdansk Medical University is the leader in medical education in Poland. Providing students with modern facilities, set on a conveniently located and comfortable campus.
Gdansk is one of the three cities making up the Tri-city (Trojmiasto). The three cities are located in a row on the coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Poland. Gdansk was destroyed after World War II and carefully restored in the years after. Gdansk attracts tourists and travelers to immerse themselves in its culture and history. The old town provides beautiful architecture and picturesque Burgher Houses. When you’re not studying you’ll be able to take advantage of everything this historical city has to offer.
To work or study as Doctor in the US, you will be required to gain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) Certification. This requires that you pass a series of Licensing Exams. The first of which is the USMLE Step 1. Traditionally taken by US Medical Seniors after their 2nd year of study, this exam tests the basic sciences, by asking multiple choice Clinical Vignette style questions.
The Clinical Vignette question format means that you’ll be required to make a series of conclusions based on basic information in the question. You’ll have to source knowledge from a number of subject areas, disciplines or organ systems. The exam is not testing your memory recall, but your integration of knowledge.
The USMLE Step 1 is used by Residency Training Programs as an initial screening procedure. A good USMLE Step 1 score is vital to secure Residency interviews, good preparation is vital, to gain a good score the first time. You can only retake the USMLE Step 1 if you fail so you can’t retake to get a better score.
The USMLE Step 1 is a one day, computer-based, multiple-choice exam. Questions are split into blocks of questions. Within each block you may be faced with questions from any subject or topic area.
USMLE Step 1 Test Day Timing
Total Time: 7 hours
Tutorial Time: 15 minutes
Break Time: 45 minutes
Block Time: 60 minutes per block
USMLE Step 1 Question Format
Total Questions: 336
Questions per Block: 48
Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions, one best answer
Question Format: Clinical Vignette
Minimum Passing Score: 188 (75)
US Medical Student Average: 220-240 (86-90)
Remember that 188 (75) is a minimum passing score. This is not good enough to gain a competitive residency training program. Program Directors will use applicants USMLE Step 1 passing scores as the initial screening of applications. If your score is too low, your application won’t be seen.
You can only retake the USMLE Step 1 exam if you fail. Just passing means you are unlikely to gain Residency and cannot retake to get a better score. As an International Graduate, you need to be aiming for scores above that of US Medical Students. Residency Directors look at a number of factors when comparing applicants, the main being Medical School, and USMLE Score. Program Directors will be less likely to have heard of an international school or know of its good reputation. Your USMLE score allows you to stand out. Program Directors will see every time you take the USMLE Step 1 exam, so make sure you prepare well and pass first time.
All International Graduates who want to train or work as a Doctor in the US must gain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) Certification. This Certification tells State Medical Boards that you have the relevant knowledge to work as a Physician in the US.
To gain ECFMG Certification, you must have a Medical Degree from an IMED (International Medical Education Directory) school, provide your Medical School Transcripts and Diploma and pass the USMLE Step 1, 2CK and 2CS exams.
To book your USMLE Step 1, 2CK and 2CS exams, you must have registered with the ECFMG. You can do this at www.ecfmg.org. Once you have registered you will be given an ECFMG Identification Number, you will then be required to submit an identification form (Form 186) signed by a Dean and Notary Service.
When you are ready to book your exam, you will choose a three month Eligibility Period with the ECFMG. This is the 3 months in which you intend to take the USMLE Step 1 exam. Once you have specified your three month eligibility period, you will be sent a scheduling permit, outlining the procedure for booking your exam.
You book and take your exam with Thompson Prometric Centers, and will be charged an additional International Test Delivery Charge.
