Register for the USMLE Step 1

Below is detailed information about how you should register for your USMLE Step 1 exam.

Registration for the Steps 1 and 2 CK Exams

Registering and scheduling your exam date is a multi-step process.

  1. Secure your application materials – In order to register with the ECFMG you will be required to send official copies of numerous documents including medical transcripts and your diploma.
  2. Complete your application and submit a recent photo with your application fee – During your application you will be required to state a 3-month "eligibility period". This is the period in which you wish to sit your exams. You will need to take the exam in the eligibility period you are assigned. If you fail to do so you will lose your application fee. Applications take 4-6 weeks to process.
  3. Receive your Scheduling Permit – A Scheduling Permit will be sent to you once your application is processed. This tells you the instructions on scheduling your exam and the start and end dates of your 3-month eligibility period. You will also receive a Candidate Identification Number and Scheduling Number.
  4. Book your test date with the Prometric Centre – You will receive instructions on scheduling your test date and contacting the Prometric centre when you are sent your Scheduling Permit. Remember you must be within eligibility period when you take your exam.
