About the Teacher
“My name is Patricia Barasch and I became a Registered Nurse in the United States, where I lived for almost 20 years. Nursing is my passion—whether in the USA or here in England. I returned to England about five years ago and have since been working in the National Health Service as an RGN. I know the differences in nursing between the two countries, and I understand what internationally trained nurses want and need in order to be successful in the NCLEX. I discovered Kaplan a long time before working for them, as I studied with their preparation course before sitting the NCLEX myself. Most of all, I believe in following your dream and for a few special people perhaps I can help make their dream come true.”

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN exam) determines if it's safe for you to practice as an entry-level nurse in the US. It is considerably different from other tests you would have taken at nursing school. The NCLEX-RN® exam, is not knowledge based, instead it is application-based. The exam will test how you use critical thinking skills to construct nursing judgments.
The framework of the NCLEX-RN® exam is based on, "Meeting Client Needs." You will see four major categories and eight subcategories. All of the questions you will face on the exam entail the use of integrated nursing content. You will be expected to integrate medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric and obstetric nursing content learnt as separate entities during your nursing program.
The CAT
CAT stands for computer adaptive test, a testing format that is adapts based on your answers to the questions.
The first question you encounter will be fairly easy - below the minimum level of competency. If you select the correct answer, the computer adapts and provides you with a more difficult question. If you select the incorrect answer, you will be asked a slightly easier question. The computer does this throughout the test and is finally able to calculate your competence level.
Once you have taken your NCLEX-RN exam you will receive a pass/fail. You will not receive a numerical result.
2-4 weeks after you have taken the exam you will be notified by your individual state board of nursing of your result.
To register for the NCLEX-RN® exam you need to submit an application to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
You can contact the NCSBN through their website. This will give you the contact details of the state you wish to work in and the individual procedures each State Board requires you to follow.
Some states have combined registration for the NCLEX-RN® exam. In all other states, you must apply for licensure with the State Board of Nursing in the state in which you wish to become licensed. Once you have applied, you will receive a Candidate Bulletin to register for the NCLEX-RN® exam.
You need to register through the individual state boards to receive an Authorization to Test (ATT), the document you need to register for the NCLEX-RN® exam. You send this with your test application to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Register outside the US by phone by calling 001-952-681-3815.
