The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide US graduate schools with a common measure for comparing their applicants’ qualifications. The exam does not test specific subject knowledge and instead measures quantitative, verbal and analytical writing skills. You will be required to take the GRE if you wish to go on to graduate (post-graduate) study in the US.Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will be given a "scaled score" within a range of 200-800 for both the quantitative and verbal sections. You will also receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.
A percentile rank will be given in addition to scaled scores. Your performance will be calculated relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers, giving you a percentile rank. This means that if you scored higher than 60% of GRE test takers you scored in the 60th percentile.
As the GRE is a computerized test it is available throughout the year.
You register for the GRE with the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The most convenient way to find a testing center and register is online at www.gre.org.
Currently the cost to take the exam in the US $140. To take the exam outside the US the cost is $170. ETS takes most major credit cards.
