Live Online Course FAQs

What's the difference between the GMAT Classroom and Live Online courses?
The only difference between our conventional courses and the Live Online course is that with Live Online you do not physically sit in a classroom. Instead you access your "classroom" online, and you can interact with your instructor and classmates with chat, audio and video as you move through the lessons. Everything else remains the same, including the same expert teachers, the same course materials, and the same GMAT techniques and strategies.

Do I need to download software to join the virtual classroom?
No, all you need is an internet browser with an up-to-date version of Flash. Flash is already installed on 97% of internet browsers.

What will I see on my screen when I am in the virtual classroom?
You will see a variety of items which change throughout the lesson, including presentation slides, sample GMAT questions, a question-and-answer box, chat areas, online polls, a webcam shot of your teacher, and an onscreen whiteboard which the instructor will write on just like in a “real” classroom. We use Adobe Acrobat Connect

Will I have to dial into a conference call to hear the audio? Will this cost me money?
No—the system uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology which integrates audio into the classroom environment, allowing you to communicate without using a telephone line. It is just like using Skype. This is completely free and we’ll even send you a headset/microphone along with your coursebooks.

Do I need a broadband connection?
It is recommended that you use a high-speed internet connection to avoid any delays when in the virtual classroom. If you have dial-up, you may prefer to take Kaplan’s GMAT Premium Online Course, which contains self-paced lessons, and so does not require you to follow live online sessions.

My computer doesn't have speakers or a microphone, so how will I listen and talk in class?
We will send you a multimedia headset along with your coursebooks, which you’ll use to communicate during class. It plugs directly into your computer and does not require setup or drivers.  If you don't want to talk over the microphone, you can also type your questions in the chat box.

Do I get books and materials with GMAT Live Online?
Yes, you will get a full study kit which is identical to those used by GMAT Classroom Course students. See the Course Materials box above for a full list.  We will ship this to you ahead of the start of the course.

What should I have ready for my first course session?
You should take your Diagnostic Test online before Session 1 of your course, so plan to set aside about 3 hours to in order to complete that test. The Diagnostic Test is accessible from the Online Center. For every class, please have ready your headset or speakers, GMAT Course Book, and any materials you want for taking notes.

What do I do if I cannot make a class?
Each Live Online session is recorded so that you can review it online at your convenience. Also, all Kaplan classes are available as pre-recorded Lessons-on-Demand™ from within the Online Center.

Who can answer my academic questions about the course in which I am enrolled?
We provide academic support to students currently enrolled in a comprehensive Kaplan course. To contact Kaplan's Academic Support Department, please login to your Kaplan GMAT online resources. On your syllabus, look for the "Getting Started" section, and click the "Academic Support" link to submit your questions. You can also submit academic questions directly to your instructor by email for the duration of your enrollment period.

How can I find my Online Center username and password?
You will have received a welcome email with your Kaptest username and password. If you have not received this, please email us at kaptest.uk@kaplan.com

How can I find my username and password for the Live Online Classroom?
You will have received an email with your Live Online classroom login information. Please note that this is different from your Kaptest welcome email. If you cannot find that, please email us at kaptest.uk@kaplan.com or call us on +44 (0)20 7930 3130.

Test Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized test used by many business schools as part of the MBA admissions process. Data has shown that GMAT scores can be good predictors of academic success in the first year of MBA programs.

The GMAT tests general, mathematical, verbal and analytical writing skills. It is not a test of specific subject knowledge, nor does it assess business competence. The test contains quantitative and verbal multiple-choice questions, plus two essays.

The GMAT is offered in testing centers around the world, and takes the form of a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) in most countries.

A good GMAT score will increase your chances of getting into your top choice of MBA program. More than 250,000 people sit the GMAT every year, so prepare thoroughly to beat the competition!

Test Scores

Most people talk about GMAT scores as a number between 200 and 800, but in actual fact you will receive 4 scores, each with a percentile rank:

  • An overall score, ranging from 200 to 800 (test-taker average = 540)
  • A Math Section subscore, ranging from 0 to 60
  • A Verbal Section subscore, ranging from 0 to 60
  • An Analytical Writing Assessment score, ranging from 0 to 6

Percentile Rank
Each of the above scores is accompanied by a percentile rank, which shows the proportion of test takers who scored lower than you did. For example, a percentile rank of 65 means you scored higher than 65% of all other test takers.

Essay Scores
Each essay is graded individually from 0-6 and is marked by both a human and a computer. The grade is assigned holistically, taking into account all aspects of the essay’s content, grammar, and writing style.

Register for the Test

The easiest way to register for the GMAT is online via the website of the Graduate Management Admission Council at www.mba.com. The fee to take the GMAT is US $250, plus any applicable taxes for the country in which you sit the test (17.5% VAT for test-takers in the UK). GMAC takes most major credit cards.
