MBA Admissions Consulting

A business school application is more than just a great GMAT score.
  • Have you selected the business schools you are applying to?
  • If so, on what criteria did you base your decisions?
  • Have you started your admissions essays?
  • How are you going to tailor your applications to suit different schools?
  • Who will you approach to write your letters of recommendation?
  • How do you plan to make your application ‘stand out from the crowd’?

Competition for business school places is tough—particularly for those at the top schools and most popular programs.  Alongside a good GMAT score, you will also need first-rate essays and excellent letters of recommendation.  Your aim is to ensure you appear as talented on paper as you are in person!

No matter which stage you are at on your route to business school, Kaplan's MBA Admissions Consulting service can help you to craft a truly outstanding application.

Our expert consultant has helped students gain places at Wharton, LBS, Columbia, Kellogg, INSEAD, Oxford Saïd, IESE, NYU Stern, IMD and more!

What Our Students Say

We receive great feedback about our Admissions Consulting services.  This is what one of our recent Admissions Consulting students said about his experience with our consultant, Helen:

"When I first met Helen, she took the time to understand my future goals, and helped me position myself based on my past experiences.  In the process she brought a strategic element to my application that I had not considered before… it is her unique insight and attention to detail that impressed me most.

With Helen’s mentoring, I have been accepted to IMD, received a conditional offer from INSEAD, and an interview request from LBS.  She is an absolute gem, and a credit to your center.  Thank you again for introducing us!"

How Does It Work?

How Does it Work?

Admissions Consulting takes place on a one-to-one basis at times to suit you.  Packages begin at 5 hours, and extra hours can then be purchased individually if you need them.

Upon enrollment, a member of Kaplan's Academic Team will be in touch to discuss your requirements. Your first meeting with the consultant will then be arranged.

After an initial face-to-face meeting, much of the consulting can then be done by telephone and email, in order to fit in with your busy schedule.

Please allow up to 2 weeks after enrollment for your consulting hours to be scheduled—particularly at busy times when there is very high demand.

Essay Guidance

The focus of Kaplan's consulting service is the admissions essays – the opportunity for you to stand out from other applicants, and the most challenging part of applying to selective MBA programs for any candidate. You will benefit from a critique of your essays by a Kaplan consultant who is familiar with what business schools are looking for. The consultant will assess your essays with an objective and experienced eye, and suggest ways you can improve them to make the best impression. Each business school usually requires several essays, and as a general rule during 5 hours of admissions consulting we can review one draft of 4 or more essays or two drafts of 1-3 essays.

Note that admissions consulting hours include some time for the consultant to read and review your documents in advance of the meeting. We are happy to discuss with you your specific needs and what can be covered in different timeframes.

MBA Admissions Seminars

We also offer regular MBA Admissions Seminars.  These highly informative and interactive events cover all aspects of the MBA Admissions process, and offer useful insights, tips, information, and the ability to talk to other applicants in a group environment.

Coming to a seminar is also an ideal way to meet your admissions consultant.

Seminars take place every 6-8 weeks.  Call us on 020 7930 3130 to find out when the next one is running.

Applying to Business School

Applying to business school is a competitive and time-consuming process.  Here are some trends in MBA admissions:

Quality of Candidates

In 2007, according to GMAC research, the majority of graduate management programs indicated that their applicants either match the academic profile seen last year or were even more academically qualified based on their undergraduate GPA, GMAT scores, and other academic achievements.  The average acceptance rate across all full-time MBA programs according to GMAC was 49% in 2007.

Demographics

The average age of entering MBA students is 24-34, with most of the top schools' entrants at about 27 or 28 years old.

More women are attending business school now than 10 years ago, though they are still in the minority. Top schools tend to receive around 30% female applicants, with a few top schools receiving up to 40% of their applications from women. Part-time MBA programs consistently receive larger proportions of women applicants, 37% on average.

Test Scores

Do I need to take the GMAT?

That depends on the schools to which you are applying. Nearly all MBA programs in the US will require a GMAT score from their applicants. Schools in the UK and Europe vary, but as a general rule, the more competitive programs will require you to take the GMAT.

When should I take the GMAT?

Earlier is better—that way when it comes time to write your application essays, you will have already completed your GMAT prep and exam. GMAT scores are valid for 5 years, so even if you are not sure exactly when you want to apply for business school, take the test now and have your score on record for when you do decide to apply. The GMAT exam generally requires 2-3 months of preparation to get up to speed on the math concepts and grammar rules you may not have studied since high school, as well as the critical-thinking styles of the exam. Click here to learn about the GMAT.
