Essay Critique

The focus of Kaplan's consulting service is the admissions essays – the opportunity for you to stand out from other applicants, and the most challenging part of applying to selective graduate programs for any candidate. You will benefit from a critique of your essays by a Kaplan consultant who is familiar with what programs are looking for. The consultant will assess your essays with an objective and experienced eye, and suggest ways you can improve them to make the best impression. Each school usually requires several essays, and as a general rule during 5 hours of admissions consulting we can review one draft of 4 or more essays or two drafts of 1-3 essays.

Note that admissions consulting hours include some time for the consultant to read and review your documents in advance of the meeting. We are happy to discuss with you your specific needs and what can be covered in different timeframes.

Applying to Grad School

According to recent surveys, Americans with a graduate degree earn an average of 35 to 50 percent more than those with just a bachelor's degree. That's certainly one reason there are more people than ever applying to a graduate school.

When weighing whether or not to go to grad school, you should realistically assess what you expect from a graduate degree and exactly what program will suit you best.

GRE Scores

Admissions committees look at your GRE score to determine if you have the academic ability to succeed in graduate school. An outstanding GRE score won't necessarily get you into the school of your choice but a low score will probably keep you out. If you scored poorly on the GRE, consider taking it again. Admissions committees usually focus on your most recent score.

How should you approach the GRE?

The GRE is a standardized test; therefore, it has standard ways of approaching it — question type strategies, time-management techniques, etc. Understanding the format of the exam and the ways you can use it to your advantage can significantly increase your score. Because of the intensity of the GRE and the competitiveness of today's grad school admissions environment, we highly encourage you to prep thoroughly for the exam. The structure that preparation provides can help you build the skills, techniques, and confidence to score your best.
