A record number of UK students are studying in the US and this trend is likely to continue into 2011-12 as tuition fees rise and places become limited in UK Universities. The Fulbright Commission reported that 8861 UK students are studying in the US during 2009-10, despite the recession and this is set to rise drastically in 2011-12 and beyond.
The Institute for International Education (IIE) released data confirming that the number of British students in the US increased for a second year in a row, increasing by 2% from the previous year. The Fulbright Commission has suggested that this will only continue to increase through to 2011-12. Fulbright has seen an increase in the number of students interested in studying abroad and their USA College Day Fair saw a 50% increase in attendance this year with students and their families looking to find our more about studying in the US.
It appears that with a rise in tuition fees in the UK and places becoming limited many students and parents are looking at alternative locations. The gap in tuition fees between the US and UK is closing and of course many want to get more for their money. If tuition fees in the UK increased to £9000 many students and parents would consider paying that extra bit more to study in the states. Fulbright reports that 90% would consider looking at studying in the US if tuition fees were to rise to this amount in the UK.
Many US schools are taking this as an opportunity to recruit more international students, two thirds of US universities report to be taking extra steps the grow the number of international students on their campuses.
