ETS has confirmed that they will introduce a new component, the "Personal Potential Index"(PPI) to the GRE exam. Scheduled to debut in July 2009, the PPI will require professors or supervisors of the student's choice to evaluate students on a scale of 1 to 5 in six areas: knowledge and creativity, communication skills, teamwork, planning and organization, ethics and integrity, and resilience.
ETS analyzes the reports from the recommenders and sends a report that quantifies the student’s attributes and “personal potential” in those six key areas to the graduate schools of the student’s choice.
From July 09 onwards, those who register for the GRE will have the option of using the PPI at no additional cost. Past GRE test-takers can choose to use it for a fee of $20.

What this means for GRE test-takers:
- From July 2009 onwards, you should be aware that with your GRE registration, you will have the option of participating in the PPI and sending reports to up to 4 schools.
- The PPI reports will provide support for another dimension of your personality and character as you apply to graduate school, and you should think carefully about who you choose to fill out the evaluations. You should also monitor the admissions requirements of specific schools to see if any programs begin to make the PPI mandatory.
- If you are applying in Fall 2009 and took the exam prior to July 2009 you may wish to participate in the PPI, for the $20 fee.
